  Just Add Water ( 1 September 2010 )

Two of our finest club ambassadors Dorothy Dickey and Rod Clarke recently competed at the X111 FINA World Masters Championships in Sweden with real success.

Take Dorothy and Rod, add ingredients consisting of State, National or World Championships venues, just add water, and special performances are pretty much guaranteed from these two.

Figuratively speaking though, Dot had a “locked door” barring her from ultimate medal success at the World Championships. The door needed to be opened. Not short on determination, Dorothy would no doubt have used explosives and missiles to smash through to gain entry. Fortunately though Dolphin locksmiths Godden and Moore were on hand to fashion a key in order to quietly unpick the secure locked door. Life member Dorothy, along with her customary shopping trolley, walked straight on through, before finally loading up with 2 gold, 2 silver, and a bronze, as well as breaking a Championship record.

Both swim coaches have the knowledge, nous and experience to carefully propel top swimmers to Gold and Championship best times. Club members are fortunate in that Frank and Margie also share that ability to style programs for all other participants wishing to improve within an atmosphere that embraces fun, friendship and fitness.

Roket Rod, current Dolphin of the Year is another person passionate about his sport. He was up there with the very best, and no doubt will have added to his long list of his swimming friends, and have plenty of stories to share over coffee when he arrives home with Robyn in September.

For those members wishing to set a goal, the next World Masters Championships will be held in Riccione, Italy 2012.

Report on Chocoholics Treats Walk ( 21 August 2010 )

A very select group of gals attended this day out. Select because we were in the company of only one man by the name of Tony Chenco.

We car pooled in from Aquarena and all met at Haigh’s Chocolates the Block Arcade in Elizabeth St. Our guide was very informative and went into the history of the arcade, the different shops, the origin of the chocolates and the different strengths of the cocoa and where the beans were grown.
Our group of seven was quite small, but we were accompanied by a ‘hens party’ and another wedding group.

We had small tastings of dark and milk chocolates and then had the opportunity to buy samples in each chocolate shop with our discount vouchers. During the walk we went to Haighs, then on to Galleria where we sampled T2’s specialty and most unusual teas. This was followed by a visit to Deva who make chocolates for the corporate sector. These were so delicious and impecably decorated that it seemed a shame to actually have to bite into them and spoil the artwork. The tour finished up with a visit to Koko Black in the Block Arcade and afternoon tea at CH2.

Although we had samples we were certainly not (chocolated out). The samples were small and just little samples that melted in your mouth. I personally could have indulged more but held back and brought a few samples home for family to taste. Afternoon tea was not chocolate but a kind of light creamy soufflé with a drink of choice. Sue unfortunately couldn’t taste her chocolate at all due to her sinus problem but I know she will enjoy her goodies later on.

Thanks to Jenny, Jan, Tony, Leanne, Theresa and Sue for accompanying me on this wonderful afternoon out.
